Context
Sidra is an educational initiative aimed at promoting social inclusion and equity in Kuwait. The project is centered around a role-play card game and an interactive storytelling website, both built on research with people from diverse backgrounds living in Kuwait. The goal was to create accessible tools that foster dialogue, understanding, and empathy across different communities and that could be integrated into educational settings or used by the general public.
Problem
Kuwait has a highly diverse population, with expatriates making up a significant portion of residents. Despite this diversity, there are limited resources that encourage understanding and meaningful interaction between different communities. The challenge was to represent people and their cultural identities thoughtfully, avoiding stereotypes, while creating engaging tools that would educate, entertain and inspire dialogue.
Approach and Solution
1
Card Game: Characters inspired by survey insights, paired with words in 8 languages to tell their stories. Print-and-play version for schools and public use.
2
Website: Game instructions and download, storytelling introduction section with interactive survey results and the Map of Memories—a visualization of meaningful places, linked to real stories, using handwritten words in multiple scripts.
3
Visual Concept: Languages as a visual identity, highlighting diversity without stereotypes, applied across cards, characters and website.
Impact
1
Highlighted the richness of diversity in Kuwait through interactive and visually engaging experiences.
2
Revealed how people connect with places and memories in Kuwait.
3
Enabled ongoing research through live survey updates.
4
Created playful, reflective tools that inspire dialogue on inclusion.
Learnings
1
Designing for sensitive cultural contexts requires balancing creativity with respect and empathy, especially when representing people’s identities.
2
Data visualization and storytelling can create emotional engagement, not just present information.
3
Multi-modal projects (game + website) benefit from consistent conceptual frameworks that can be applied across different touchpoints.
4
Collaborating with diverse participants and incorporating their personal input (e.g., handwritten words and voices) adds authenticity and personal connection to the experience.
